Reading Fence Names

Posted on

Have you ever gone shopping for fencing wire and seen a bunch of numbers on the label but are not 100% sure what they all mean? If so, this blog is for you. Fence wire uses a specific pattern of numbers to explain the specs of the fence. Just glancing at it, they start to look very similar and become a bit overwhelming. Understanding what the pattern of numbers means can help you decide which type of wiring will best fit your project.

All Pasture Management woven wire products use this description to explain the size and design of our wire.

  • Number of horizontal wires
  • Height of the fence (inches)
  • Vertical wire spacing (inches)
  • Length of the fence roll (feet)
  • Diameter of the wire (gauge)
    • Quick tip: Remember that the smaller the gauge number, the larger the diameter of the wire. A 12.5 ga wire is larger than a 14.5 ga wire.
  • Class of galvanization

Let’s use Fence name 10-47-6 330 12.5ga C3 as an example:

  • 10: Number of horizontal wires
  • 47: Height of the fence (inches)
  • 6: Vertical wire spacing (inches)
  • 330: Length of the fence roll (feet)
  • 12.5ga: Diameter of the wire (gauge)
  • C3: Class 3 galvanization

It is important to know how to read fence descriptions. If you select a fence with the incorrect gauge size, not only can it make your fence less effective, but it can also cause more trouble for you down the road.

Once you understand the numbers in the fence name, it allows you to identify what you need quickly and efficiently. Next time you’re shopping at your local Pasture Management dealer, just simply look at our fence name description to compare the fence wire and select the one that best fits your needs.
